Adding Voiceovers to your videos

Things to note:

  • Sit on a comfortable chair that doesn’t swivel

  • Make sure you record these voiceovers in a room with minimal external noises (Eg. train line, close to the road). If there is a loud bang or a loud noise that happens as you are doing your voiceover, it would be best to re-do the line.

  • Place your phone or microphone in a sturdy position in front of your mouth, you do not want to hold the microphone as movements can cause sounds. You can easily prop your phone up on a few boxes on a table to increase elevation. Another reason to not sit on a swivel chair, you want to keep your face in front of the microphone so your voice projects forward, if you are rotating on a chair you will hear it.

  • Make sure there are no air-cons, washing machines or dishwashers on when recording.

  • Have the bottom of the phone (where the microphone is) facing your mouth

  • Use the pre-installed app “Voice Memo” on your phone

  • Write out your scripts and read through them. If they are printed be sure not to ruffle the paper too much. Stick the scripts in front of your face (sticky tape or blu-tac on a wall) so that your head is positioned straight towards the mic and you are not looking down. The projection of your voice plays a huge factor in all of this.

Once all voiceovers have been recorded..

  • Send them to your computer, either through airdrop or by emailing them to yourself.

  • The files are currently in .m4a format, they need to be converted to .mp3 format, this can be done via one of these websites:

  • Once all files have been downloaded, use the free Adobe Podcast Enhance platform to improve the quality of them. I recommend setting the strength to 50%. If there is a lot of background noise the software will become confused and distort what is being said so make sure you listen through it thoroughly. This still isn’t 100% necessary but depending on the circumstances it can drastically improve the quality of your voiceovers

NOW ON TO EDITING..

Download all of the video files you have that you need to add voiceovers to.

Open up iMovie

Click “Create New” > “Movie”

Click “Import Media” and click on all of the video files + voiceovers
